Between Who You Were and Who You’re Becoming: The Transformative Power of Liminal Space

A couple of years ago, someone introduced me to the concept of ‘liminal spaces’. It was explained to me in terms of architecture - those in-between places like corridors and stairwells that exist only to connect one room to another.
I've been thinking about how we sometimes inhabit those spaces.
I see it with the people I work with. The moment when they realize their current life no longer fits, but they can't quite see what comes next. They've left behind who they were, but haven't yet arrived at who they're becoming. They're standing in the hallway between two versions of themselves.
It's an uncomfortable place to be.
And that's where Coaching lives. My role isn't to rush them through or tell them which door to choose. It's to stand in that corridor with them, being curious about where they want to go, reminding them it's real and it's waiting for them.
I know this space as I've lived in it myself.
When I started my Coaching journey, I knew I was leaving my previous career behind, but it took months before I could name where I was headed. Even saying the words out loud felt impossible at first.
I know what it feels like to stand there, unsure. And I know what it feels like on the other side.
The liminal space isn't where you get stuck. It's where transformation happens.
